Global Sights For Worthy Australian Design

Worthy is proud to be collaborating with Australian furniture and lighting designer Chris Hardy.  Their first project together is to source a high-calibre, cost effective manufacturer for Hardy’s ‘Langdon’ Armchair.

Langdon is an elegant armchair that, because of the product’s simplicity, works well in a wide variety of contexts.  The basic form of Langdon falls in line with the 20th century paradigm of traditional European timber armchair construction.  It has been developed with a process-led approach to design.  The visual language of all its frame components can be characterised as a ribbon-like square section of solid timber.  All junctions in the frame are visually softened using a small elbow cut into the different sections to create gentle and easily manufacturable transitions.

In the case of Worthy’s project with Hardy, they are exploring suitable production craftsmen in Eastern Europe with high volume, hi-tech production capabilities.  They are also motivated by manufacturing closer to the source of a broader variety of plantation grown timbers such as European Ash, Beech & Oak.  From there, Worthy will focus on introducing Hardy and the Langdon to a network of contract dealers around the world to achieve global sales traction and recognition.  Own World will retail the Langdon collection in Australia.

“We feel this type of consultancy role is new for Australia” says Quintal-Norris, director if Worthy.  “In some ways we hope the services offered by Worthy will give Australian designers an international platform - not necessarily having to leave our shores to “make it big”.  Worthy aims to act as the conduit that will launch them globally and take-on some of the business side of product manufacturing and global distribution.  This way our designers can keep their energies charged for more creative pursuits.”

Diamant Hotel Canberra room refurbishments

Diamant Hotel Canberra

Diamant Hotel Canberra

In 2011 Chris Hardy P/L was involved in refurbishing a number of rooms in the Diamant Hotel located in New Acton, ACT.  The extent of our involvement was to develop and project manage the construction of a series of vanity units to be installed into approximately 20 of the rooms.

The resulting design consisted of a floating stone plane housing an angular copper tray that drained into a concealed tray towards the rear.

Chris Hardy P/L offers a tried and tested consultancy service to develop furniture products that meet budget, lead time, functionality and required aesthetic.

Chris Hardy P/L has been developing Australian made furniture and lighting products for local specification markets since 2007. In this time we have developed excellent relationships with a wide variety of quality manufacturers and suppliers with whom we now collaborate in the development of new work.

The expertise we have accumulated in developing ranges under our own brand enables us to offer a consultancy service to develop products to a client’s specific requirements in terms of a budget, required aesthetic and lead time. An outdoor communal table and bench seat assembly called Slide, developed specifically for an education context, is a good example of this. The client, Malcolm Boyes from the Northern Sydney Institute, Northern Beaches Campus, was unable to find an existing product within the supplier network that suited the application or budgetary requirements and instead chose to work with us to develop a product that did.

Malcolm explains: ‘As a leading education provider, we must foster innovation and ensure we recognise opportunities to create amazing learning experiences for our students. Working with Chris has been rewarding; we saw this as opportunity to develop and manufacture a product locally that our students can interact with, enjoy and appreciate. The collaboration showcases leading design in an environment that appreciates and supports the growth of talented individuals’.
